the ancient and the modern
The affinity between the ancient and the modern drives the artistic aesthetic for Leah Pipe's work. It presents an archival image, a traditional shape, design or line, a weathered time-honoured face in a totem or an ancient faded chilkat pattern in a modern and new scape ~ clean, flat colour-blocked backgrounds, twists of colour, push the visual interpretations of cultural iconic elements.
"art must take reality by surprise" - F. Sagan
Inspiration is gathered from many elements and sources: iconic totem poles, archival images of villages and people, ancient design forms found on artifacts, bentwood boxes and blankets long-ago recorded, documented and put in storage ~ brought to life with a new vision ~ mountains, salmon, ravens, northern skies and westcoast winters ~ all viewed and experienced by the artist in her daily life ~ recreated and presented with a modern view. |
